My mom did not attain a formal doctorate in foreign affairs. Although, she would have loved that but then she couldn’t see the use of it in running the household affairs and domesticating four wild children. But what she did know was how to balance the conflicts of me and my brother who would often run to her with a bruised cheek pointing fingers ‘He did it first!’
She would slap us.
And then I grew up and read Aristotle and Einstein who were of the view that ‘two wrongs don’t make a right’. And now I wonder from where did our foreign policy makers take their education from? From their mothers or from the Ivy Leagues which taught them how to lie and call it being diplomatic.
When US choppers attacked Pakistan army’s check posts last November (who they still call ‘ally’, the last time I checked), all what the Pakistanis wanted was an open apology. It killed 24 young souls who were fighting for a cause that majority of Pakistani population believes is the cause of the foreigners. And fighting in that cause, they died from the bullets of their own allies. Conveniently, US expressed regret. Until recently, they found a reason.
On the 15th of April, a series of attacks hit Kabul that is now being linked to the Haqqani network in Pakistan.
Here is a senior administration from US apparently admitting in NY times that “What changed was the 15th of April”.
What rationality tells us that, Talibans should express ‘regret’ and all would be good. And to take this one step further, Mullah Omar should express regret for 9/11 since Osama is dead and this decade long war in Afghanistan would be over.
May be big fancy long worded degrees in political affairs don’t teach the simple truth my mother knew that ‘two wrongs don’t make a right’, they make a good excuse though and in the end make a good mess for sure.
What Obama, Mullah Omar and Gilani need is a slapping from their mothers. And my mother would be happy to do that on everyone’s behalf. This much, I am willing to go for the world peace.
